The first roll in craps is called the "come out" roll and with this one of three things can occur. For example, if the dice show a number 7 or 11, then you would win the bet. When this happens, you would continue playing by rolling the dice again. Secondly, if the dice were to show a 2, 3, or 12, then you would lose, which is called "craps". Now, even with this, you would still roll the dice again. The third scenario on the first roll would be if the dice show anything else such as 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10. This is what is referred to as "box point".
With craps, the objective of the game is to keep shooting the dice until a box point is rolled again. However, while trying to achieve that, if a 7 is rolled, you would lose. After the game is over, a new shooter is chosen, which would be the next person standing around the crap table. At this point, a new game begins.
In addition to the rules of the game, it is crucial to understand betting associated with craps. For starters, prior to the "come out" roll, every player needs to place a bid. For this, you would put a bet on the "pass line" or the "don't pass line". With the pass line, you are betting with the shooter while the "don't pass line" means betting with the house. Now, you can also place bets on the actual numbers on the crap table, which are 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10. If you go this route, you can place a bet on each number or all of the numbers - your choice. If the numbers you placed come out before a 7 is rolled, then you win. Remember that the odds of winning vary on the numbers bet. For example, if you bet 4 and 10, then you would be paid 9-5, if you bet 5 and 9, then the payout is 7-5 and bets on 6 and 8 would pay 7-6 odds.

Of all three rules, the Atlantic City rules are by far the most favorable to a player.
